History of Berkeley Heights NJ

Due to the New Jersey Legislature which took place on 8th November, 1809, the original incorporation of Berkeley Heights NJ took place as New Providence Township. It became a part of Union County on 19th March, 1857. The name was changed to Berkeley Heights on 6th November, 1951 due to a referendum that took place on the very same day. It was named after the First Baron Berkeley of Stratton named John Berkeley, who was one among the founders of the Province of New Jersey.
