History of Closter NJ

Closter’s first land grant deed was written on 13th April, 1671. Barent and Resolvert Nagel bought the northern half of this area on 25th April, 1710, and were among the first settlers of Closter NJ along with the Vervalen family. Located behind the Palisades’ highest point, the area enjoyed the bliss of protection and isolation. The name of the borough has many rumors as to where it came to be derived from, one of them being from Frederick Closter, who was an early settler of Closter NJ. It was on 1st January, 1904 that Closter was developed as an incorporated municipality owing to an act of the New Jersey Legislature.
