History of Kinnelon NJ

Kinnelon NJ was previously named as ‘Charlotteburg’, dedicated to the wife of King George III of Great Britain, Charlotte. Owing to the act of the New Jersey Legislature, Kinnelon was created on 20th February, 1922. An industrialist from the 19th century named Francis Kinney established the Kinney Brothers Tobacco Company and also an estate dating as far back as 1884.

Kinney constructed Smoke Rise, which is a summer cottage, from the land that he bought that was about 5,000 acres big. Morris Kinney, who was the son of Francis Kinney, was the one after whom the borough of Kinnelon was named. He also lived in this estate for a major portion of his life.
