History of Bedford, MA

The Europeans brought about the settlement of Bedford in 1640. The town was incorporated from a portion of both Concord and Billerica back in 1729. After travelling for 10 days on the Arabella, John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley arrived on the shores of the New World in 1630. They went on to become the first governor and deputy governor respectively and were granted 2,200 acres of land by the General Court of Massachusetts in 1637. The duo came to be known as Brothers Rocks due to the union of their families that took place when Winthrop's daughter, Mary, got married to Dudley's son, Rev. Samuel Dudley.,/p>
