History of Littleton, MA

Anglo-European settlers were responsible for the settlement of Littleton in 1686, after which the town had its official incorporation by act of the Massachusetts General Court on 2nd November, 1715. The Meetinghouse of Littletown was shifted to a new building in 1742 and is the current spot of the Unitarian Church.

The men of Littleton were a part of the militia organized by the Crown in order to defend against the French in Canada as well as the First Nations. Littleton’s militia system soon grew into the organization that was responsible for the confrontation of the British Regulars on 18th April, 1775. The very first public schools in the town were built in 1795.

The growth of Littleton was happening at a gradual pace, and during the 1800s, it came to be known for the cider being produced in the town along with the beautiful apple orchards. The Baptists in Littletown took the decision of developing their own society in 1822, as a result of which a church was built at the corner of King Street and Goldsmith Street.

Transcendentalism and Abolitionism are two movements that witnessed popularity in Littleton during the 1800s. The men of Littleton also served during the Civil War and a plaque was created to memorialize them, which can be found on either side of the Houghton Memorial Building.
