The first settlement of Southborough can be traced back to 1660 and the town was officially incorporated in July of 1727. It started as a farming community and by the time 19th century came to a close, Southborough came to be known as a manufacturer of boots, plasters, shoes, and also straw hats. It was in 1727 that Southborough became the "south borough" of Marlborough.
