History of Stow, MA

The official incorporation of Stow, MA took place in 1683. Henry Gardner, who was a resident of Stow, was elected Receiver-General of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress (the government of Massachusetts during the American Revolution) on 28th October, 1774. The grandson of Henry Gardner, who was also his namesake, served as the governor of Massachusetts from 1855 to 1857.

Although Stow started off as a town with a large area, it gave up areas of its land to towns such as Harvard, Shirley, Boxborough, Hudson, and Maynard. The town of Stow lost 1300 acres and almost half its population when Maynard was created.
