History of Westford, MA

Westford was initially a village in Chelmsford and was known as 'West Chelmsford’. Since it became too big a village to manage its own governance in 1729, the official incorporation of Westford took place that same year on 23rd September. Apples, granite, and worsted yarn were primarily produced in the town during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In fact, the Abbot Worsted Company, which is located in Westford MA, was known to be the first company in the country to make use of camel hair for worsted yarns.
