History of Weston, MA

The Watertown settlement of 1630 had caused Weston to be a part of it. However, the land was only used for the purpose of grazing cattle till the end of the century. The Farms became a distinct precinct in 1698 while Weston became an individual town somewhere between 1712-1713.

Weston had an advantage of being located along the main route west from Boston. As a result of this, travelers were receiving services from the residents of the town on the Boston Post Road by the 18th century. Stony Brook and the Crescent Street area witnessed sawmills and grist during the beginning of the 17th century. The Hobbs Tannery on North Avenue and the Hews redware pottery on Boston Post Road, both of which were significant manufacturing entities, were initiated during the colonial era.

Commercial traffic came in from the Boston Post Road post the launch of the Worcester Turnpike in 1810. The neighboring towns, however, continued to receive dry goods from Weston till 1830–40. Weston started to make a name for itself eventually as a summer resort region due to the attractive rural landscape and the convenience brought in owing to the rail transportation. As the population continued to grow, small industries kept sprouting across the town, such as tool factories, pottery, tannery, cotton and woolen mills, and so on.
